Lay investiture

Lay investiture is the appointment or installation of bishops and other church officials by secular rulers, who often conferred symbols of office and authority.

Carolingian Empire: A western European empire ruled by the Carolingian dynasty from the eighth to tenth centuries. Carolingian rulers strengthened their governance by appointing bishops to religious and territorial offices.
Investiture: The formal installation of someone in an office or position of authority. Lay investiture was a contested form of this broader practice.
Investiture Controversy: A conflict over the appointment of bishops between the papacy and secular rulers, especially the Holy Roman emperors. This was the defining confrontation over lay investiture in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries.
Dictatus Papae: A collection of propositions asserting papal authority, entered in a register of Pope Gregory VII in 1075. Its claims supplied a forceful reforming argument against secular control of church appointments.
Ottonian Church System: A system in which German kings used bishops and abbots as royal officials and granted them temporal authority. It shows how lay appointment became embedded in imperial government in Germany.
Ring and Staff: Ceremonial objects used in medieval rites to signify a bishop’s spiritual office. Secular rulers’ delivery of these objects made their role in appointing bishops visible.
Pope Gregory VII: The pope from 1073 to 1085 who pursued reforms limiting secular control of church offices. Gregory VII challenged rulers’ authority to invest bishops and clashed with Henry IV.
Gregorian Reform: A movement to reform the medieval Western Church, strengthen papal authority, and reduce secular control over clergy. Opposition to lay investiture formed a central part of its program.
Feudalism: A set of medieval political relationships organized around landholding, service, and personal obligations. Invested bishops could hold lands and owe political service like other powerful vassals.
Simony: The buying or selling of spiritual offices or privileges. Critics linked ruler-controlled appointments to the sale and political misuse of church offices.
