Layover

A layover is a temporary stop during a journey, especially the interval between connecting flights. It separates travel legs without ending the overall trip.

Connecting flight: A flight itinerary in which a passenger changes aircraft or flight numbers between its origin and destination. A layover is the interval that links successive flights in this itinerary.
Stopover: A planned break in a journey that lasts longer than a typical connection and may include time at the stop's destination. It contrasts with the usually shorter pause between connecting legs called a layover.
Airport hotel: A hotel located at or near an airport, often used by passengers between flights. It can provide a place to sleep during an overnight layover.
Flight delay: A flight's departure or arrival later than its scheduled time. A delay on an earlier leg can consume the time reserved for a layover.
Minimum connection time: The shortest scheduled interval an airport or airline permits between arriving and departing flights. It sets the practical lower limit for a flight layover.
Transit: Passage through a place while traveling onward to another destination. A layover is one possible pause during transit, not transit itself.
Lounge (airport): A dedicated airport waiting area offering seating and services to eligible passengers. Lounges offer a more comfortable place to spend a long layover.
Airline ticket: A document or electronic record that confirms a passenger's right to travel on specified flights. Whether connecting legs share a ticket often affects rebooking after a missed connection.
Missed connection: A failure to board a subsequent service after an earlier leg arrives too late or transfer takes too long. A short or disrupted layover can leave too little time to reach the next departure.
Direct flight: A flight that travels from origin to destination under one flight number, potentially making intermediate stops. Unlike a connecting itinerary with a layover, it need not involve changing flights.
