LC circuit

An LC circuit combines an inductor and a capacitor, whose energy exchange produces electrical oscillations and resonance.

Inductor: A circuit component that stores energy in a magnetic field when electric current flows through it. Its magnetic field stores energy as the capacitor discharges.
Inductance: A property describing how a changing current produces an electromotive force and magnetic-field energy. It quantifies the inductor’s opposition to changing current.
Tuned circuit: A resonant electrical circuit designed to select or reject signals at particular frequencies. An LC circuit provides the frequency-selective core of many tuned circuits.
RC circuit: A circuit combining resistance and capacitance, commonly used for timing and signal shaping. It stores energy electrically but dissipates rather than exchanges it with an inductor.
Capacitor: A circuit component that stores energy in an electric field between conductors. Its electric field stores energy that drives current through the inductor.
Capacitance: A measure of how much electric charge a conductor system stores per unit potential difference. It determines how much charge is stored at a given voltage.
Radio receiver: An electronic device that receives radio waves and extracts information from them. Tuned LC networks can select a desired station’s carrier frequency.
RL circuit: A circuit combining resistance and inductance, with a characteristic current response over time. It includes magnetic energy storage but lacks the capacitor needed for LC oscillation.
Resonance: A response that becomes large when a system is driven near one of its natural frequencies. An LC circuit responds most strongly at its natural oscillation frequency.
Electrical charge: A physical property of matter that causes electromagnetic interactions. Oscillation transfers charge back and forth between the capacitor’s plates.
