Lead(II) acetate

Lead(II) acetate is an inorganic salt composed of lead(II) ions and acetate ions, with formula Pb(CH₃COO)₂. It is toxic and soluble in water.

Lead(II) ion: The Pb²⁺ cation formed when a lead atom loses two electrons. This cation supplies the positively charged component of the salt.
Solubility: The extent to which a substance dissolves in a particular solvent under specified conditions. Lead(II) acetate dissolves readily, releasing lead and acetate species into water.
Lead sugar: A sweet-tasting crystalline form of lead(II) acetate, historically used as a sweetener. Its sweetness led to dangerous use in foods and drinks.
Lead poisoning: Illness caused by harmful exposure to lead, which can damage multiple organ systems. Absorbed lead from the salt can contribute to systemic poisoning.
Acetate: The negatively charged ion CH₃COO⁻, formed by deprotonation of acetic acid. Two acetate ions balance the charge of each lead(II) ion.

Lead encephalopathy: A severe neurological disorder caused by lead exposure, involving brain dysfunction. High-dose exposure to soluble lead compounds can produce this acute complication.
Ionic compound: A substance whose ions are held together by electrostatic attraction. Lead(II) acetate is classified by its oppositely charged ions.
Lead(II) sulfate: A sparingly soluble lead salt with formula PbSO₄. Sulfate can precipitate dissolved lead(II) as this poorly soluble solid.
