Lead(II) sulfide

Lead(II) sulfide (PbS) is an inorganic compound of lead and sulfur. It occurs naturally as galena, the principal ore of lead.

Galena: Galena is the naturally occurring mineral form of lead(II) sulfide. It is the mineral name for naturally occurring PbS.
Precipitation reaction: A precipitation reaction forms an insoluble solid when dissolved substances react in a solution. Soluble lead and sulfide sources can react to precipitate PbS.
Hydrothermal mineral deposit: A hydrothermal mineral deposit forms when hot, mineral-bearing fluids precipitate minerals within or near rock. Many galena deposits formed as mineral-rich fluids deposited PbS.
Lead smelting: Lead smelting extracts metallic lead from ores or recycled materials using heat and chemical reduction. Smelting converts galena concentrates into metallic lead.
Lead: Lead is a dense, soft, bluish-gray metallic chemical element with atomic number 82. Lead supplies the metal ions in the compound.
Solubility product: The solubility product is the equilibrium constant describing dissolution of a sparingly soluble ionic solid. PbS's very low solubility product explains its precipitation from suitable solutions.
Sphalerite: Sphalerite is zinc sulfide, the principal ore mineral of zinc, often found with galena. It commonly occurs alongside galena in lead-zinc deposits.
Lead-acid battery: A lead-acid battery is a rechargeable electrochemical cell using lead-based electrodes and sulfuric acid electrolyte. It is a major use of lead recovered from PbS ores.
Sulfur: Sulfur is a yellow nonmetallic chemical element with atomic number 16. Sulfur supplies the sulfide ions in PbS.
Lead sulfide nanocrystal: A lead sulfide nanocrystal is a nanoscale crystalline particle of PbS whose electronic properties depend on its size. Quantum confinement changes the optical response of nanoscale PbS.
