Leaellynasaura
Leaellynasaura was a small herbivorous ornithopod dinosaur from Early Cretaceous Australia, known from fossils discovered in Victoria.
Dinosaur Cove: A fossil-bearing locality on the coast of Victoria, Australia, with Early Cretaceous deposits. Leaellynasaura fossils were found in this region’s Cretaceous rocks.
Ornithopod: A group of mostly herbivorous ornithischian dinosaurs, including bipedal and quadrupedal forms. Leaellynasaura belongs to this broad dinosaur group.
Tom Rich: An Australian paleontologist known for research on Cretaceous vertebrates from Victoria. He helped describe Leaellynasaura from Australian fossil material.
Atlascopcosaurus: A small ornithopod dinosaur known from Early Cretaceous fossils in Victoria, Australia. It lived in the same broad region and geological interval.
Dinosaur endothermy: The hypothesis that some or all dinosaurs maintained elevated internal body temperatures through metabolism. Its cold high-latitude setting raises questions about dinosaur temperature regulation.
Eumeralla Formation: An Early Cretaceous geological formation in Victoria, Australia, preserving dinosaur-bearing sediments. Its rocks preserve fossils attributed to Leaellynasaura.
Ornithischia: One of the two major dinosaur lineages, including horned, armored, and many plant-eating dinosaurs. Ornithopods, including Leaellynasaura, are part of this lineage.
Patricia Vickers-Rich: An Australian paleontologist whose research includes Mesozoic vertebrates from southern Australia. She co-described Leaellynasaura and helped establish its scientific identity.
Qantassaurus: A small ornithischian dinosaur known from Early Cretaceous deposits in Victoria, Australia. It is another small plant-eating dinosaur from Leaellynasaura’s region.
Polar night: The period each year when the Sun remains below the horizon in polar regions. Seasonal darkness shaped the environmental challenges faced by high-latitude animals.
