League of Nations mandate

A territory administered by a League of Nations member under an international mandate after the First World War. Mandates were assigned according to the territory’s presumed readiness for self-government.

Class A mandate: A League of Nations mandate category for former Ottoman territories considered provisionally independent but needing administrative assistance. Class A mandates granted the greatest prospect of near-term independence.
Mandate for Syria and Lebanon: The League of Nations mandate under which France administered Syria and Lebanon after the First World War. French rule illustrates how a Class A mandate could involve prolonged political control and resistance.
