Lee Teng-hui

Lee Teng-hui was Taiwan’s president from 1988 to 2000 and the first Taiwan-born president. He oversaw democratization and advanced a distinct Taiwanese political identity.

Wild Lily student movement: A 1990 Taiwanese student movement that called for democratic reforms and the replacement of unelected representative bodies. Its demonstrations pressed Lee to convene talks and accelerate constitutional reform.
