Left-wing populism

Left-wing populism is a political style or ideology that frames politics as a struggle between ordinary people and powerful elites while emphasizing equality, redistribution, or social inclusion.

Populism: A political approach that presents society as divided between a virtuous people and a corrupt elite. Left-wing populism is one form of this people-versus-elite political approach.
Antagonism: A relation of political opposition in which groups are portrayed as having incompatible interests or identities. Populist rhetoric organizes politics around conflict between the people and elite.
Right-wing populism: A populist politics that commonly combines people-versus-elite claims with nationalism or exclusionary accounts of belonging. It often defines the people through national or cultural boundaries rather than egalitarian inclusion.
Podemos: A Spanish political party founded in 2014 that emerged from anti-austerity mobilization. Podemos developed a left-populist appeal against Spain’s political establishment.
Austerity: Policies that reduce public spending or raise taxes to limit government deficits or debt. Opposition to austerity has supplied a common grievance for left-populist movements.
People: A politically constructed collective whose members are presented as the legitimate source of sovereignty. Left-wing populists invoke ordinary people as the rightful political majority.
Political rhetoric: The language and persuasive techniques used to shape political beliefs and mobilize support. Left-wing populism uses rhetorical framing to define its political camps.
Liberalism: A political tradition emphasizing individual rights, constitutional limits, and legal equality. Liberalism’s institutional constraints can conflict with populist claims of an undivided popular will.
Syriza: A Greek left-wing party that became the country’s governing party in 2015. Syriza joined opposition to austerity with claims to represent ordinary Greeks against established power.
Political polarization: The growing division of political attitudes or identities into opposing camps. People-versus-elite rhetoric can sharpen political divisions and weaken compromise.
