Legal gender recognition

Legal gender recognition is the official recognition of a person's gender in identity documents and public records, often through changing a recorded sex or gender marker.

Gender marker: A field in an identity record that records a person's sex or gender. This is the document element that legal recognition changes or confirms.
Medical model of transgender identity: An approach that treats transgender status as a medical condition requiring diagnosis or treatment. It contrasts with recognition based on personal declaration rather than clinical proof.
