Legislature

A deliberative body authorized to make, amend, and repeal laws for a state or other political community. Legislatures may also oversee government, approve budgets, and represent constituents.

Legislative process: The procedures by which a legislature considers, amends, and enacts proposed laws. It describes the steps through which a legislature turns proposals into binding statutes.
Unicameralism: A system of government in which the legislature has one chamber. It contrasts with legislatures divided into two chambers.
Appropriation (government finance): A legal authorization to spend public funds for specified purposes. Legislatures use appropriations to determine how governments may spend money.
Executive (government): The branch of government responsible for administering laws and directing public policy. Executives implement laws, while legislatures primarily make and revise them.
Bill (law): A proposed law submitted for consideration by a legislature. Bills are the units that legislators debate, amend, and vote on.
Bicameralism: A system of government in which the legislature has two chambers. Many legislatures divide lawmaking between an upper and a lower chamber.
Taxation: The imposition of compulsory financial charges by a government to fund public purposes. Legislatures commonly authorize taxes and set the rules governing them.
Judiciary: The system of courts that interprets and applies law in legal disputes. Courts adjudicate cases rather than enact statutes.
Committee: A smaller group appointed to examine specific subjects or proposals and report findings. Committees scrutinize bills and conduct much of a legislature’s detailed work.
Parliamentary system: A system in which the executive government depends on the confidence of the legislature. It links legislative majorities directly to the formation and survival of government.
