Léon Walras

Léon Walras was a French economist who formulated a mathematical theory of general economic equilibrium, analyzing how interdependent markets can jointly determine prices and quantities.

General equilibrium theory: An economic framework in which prices and quantities across multiple markets are jointly determined. Walras made simultaneous market equilibrium the central problem of his economic theory.
Tâtonnement: A price-adjustment process in which trades are suspended until markets clear at announced prices. Walras proposed this auction-like process to describe adjustment toward equilibrium.
Éléments d'économie politique pure: Walras’s multivolume treatise, first published in 1874–1877, presenting his mathematical theory of pure economics. This work contains the mature formulation of his general equilibrium system.
