Leonhard Euler

Leonhard Euler (1707–1783) was a Swiss mathematician and physicist whose work shaped calculus, number theory, mechanics, and graph theory. His prolific writing helped establish mathematical notation and methods still used today.

Euler's Identity: The equation e^(iπ) + 1 = 0, connecting five fundamental mathematical constants. It distills Euler’s connections among exponential functions, complex numbers, and trigonometry.
Calculus of Variations: A field of mathematics that finds functions optimizing quantities defined by integrals. Euler helped formulate its central methods for finding curves that minimize or maximize quantities.
Seven Bridges of Königsberg: An eighteenth-century puzzle asking whether a walk could cross each of Königsberg’s seven bridges exactly once. Euler’s proof that no such walk exists is widely regarded as the beginning of graph theory.
Johann Bernoulli: A Swiss mathematician who advanced calculus and taught Euler during his formative years. Bernoulli recognized Euler’s talent and guided his early mathematical development.
