Leonid Hurwicz

Leonid Hurwicz (1917–2008) was a Polish-American economist who helped found mechanism design, the study of how institutions allocate resources when information is dispersed.

Mechanism design: The study of designing rules and institutions to achieve desired outcomes when participants hold private information. Hurwicz helped establish this field by formalizing how institutions perform under dispersed information.
Incentive compatibility: A property of a mechanism under which participants do best by reporting their information truthfully or following prescribed strategies. Hurwicz’s framework asks whether an institution can achieve its goal when participants have reasons to misrepresent information.
Warsaw School of Economics: A Polish institution of higher education in economics, where Hurwicz studied before World War II. Hurwicz began his formal economics education there before leaving Poland during the war.
