Leopold I of Belgium

Leopold I was Belgium’s first king, reigning from 1831 until his death in 1865. A German-born prince, he helped establish the monarchy and maintain Belgium’s independence.

Belgian Revolution: The 1830 uprising that ended the United Kingdom of the Netherlands’ rule over Belgium. The revolution created the independent state whose crown Leopold accepted.
Charlotte of Wales: The only child of Britain’s future George IV, whose death in childbirth in 1817 altered the British succession. Leopold’s marriage to Charlotte brought him close to the British royal family before his Belgian reign.
Belgian neutrality: Belgium’s internationally guaranteed policy of remaining outside wars between other powers before 1914. Leopold used diplomacy to protect the neutrality that underpinned the kingdom’s security.

Louise of Orléans: Queen of the Belgians from 1832 to 1850 and the first wife of Leopold I. Her marriage to Leopold strengthened Belgium’s relationship with France.
Belgian monarchy: The constitutional institution headed by Belgium’s hereditary king. Leopold established the monarchy’s role within Belgium’s parliamentary system.
Constitutional monarchy: A form of government in which a monarch’s authority is limited by a constitution and political institutions. Leopold’s crown operated within this governing form rather than as absolute rule.
National Congress of Belgium: The elected assembly that designed Belgium’s constitutional monarchy and chose its first king. The congress selected Leopold and framed the constitutional limits of his crown.
Victoria of the United Kingdom: Queen of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901 and niece of Leopold I. Leopold advised Victoria and helped arrange her marriage to Prince Albert.
