Leopold II of Belgium

Leopold II was King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909 and the personal ruler of the Congo Free State from 1885 to 1908.

Congo Free State: A territory in Central Africa governed as Leopold II’s personal possession from 1885 until Belgium annexed it in 1908. Leopold’s rule there made his colonial project notorious for coercion and violence.
Berlin Conference: An 1884–1885 meeting of European powers that set rules for colonial claims in Africa. Its recognition of the Congo Free State gave international standing to Leopold’s project.
Belgian colonial empire: The overseas territories governed by Belgium, including the Congo and, later, Ruanda-Urundi. Leopold’s Congo enterprise became the largest and most consequential part of Belgium’s colonial history.

Belgian Congo: The Belgian colony established in 1908 after Belgium annexed the Congo Free State. State administration replaced Leopold’s personal rule, though colonial exploitation continued.
Roger Casement: An Irish diplomat whose 1904 report documented abuses in the Congo Free State. His investigation supplied official evidence against the system Leopold controlled.
Force Publique: The armed force of the Congo Free State and later Belgian Congo, used to enforce state authority. It enforced labor quotas and the extraction system under Leopold’s administration.
