Leopold Kronecker

Leopold Kronecker (1823–1891) was a German mathematician whose work shaped algebra and number theory. He is associated with the dictum that God made the integers and the rest is the work of man.

Integer: A whole number, including zero and negative whole numbers. Kronecker’s celebrated dictum singled out integers as mathematics’ foundational objects.
Kronecker's theorem: A theorem characterizing abelian extensions of the rational numbers through roots of unity. It expresses a central goal of Kronecker’s program for describing abelian number fields.
Ernst Eduard Kummer: A German mathematician who developed ideal numbers to address failures of unique factorization. Kummer’s work on ideals formed a major background to Kronecker’s arithmetic algebra.
