Lesbos

Lesbos is a Greek island in the northeastern Aegean Sea, separated from Turkey by the Strait of Mytilene. Its principal city and port is Mytilene.

Mytilene: Mytilene is the principal city and port of Lesbos, on the island’s southeastern coast. The island’s largest settlement and administrative center bears the same name as its ancient city.
Molyvos: Molyvos, also called Mithymna, is a historic town on the northern coast of Lesbos. Its hilltop castle and preserved streets are among the island’s best-known landmarks.
Sappho: Sappho was an archaic Greek lyric poet who lived on Lesbos and composed poetry in the Aeolic dialect. Her association with the island made Lesbos a landmark in the history of Greek lyric poetry.
Lesbos refugee crisis: The Lesbos refugee crisis describes the arrival and reception of large numbers of people fleeing conflict and persecution, especially during the 2015 European migration crisis. The island became a major entry point into Europe because of its proximity to Turkey.
Strait of Mytilene: The Strait of Mytilene is the narrow channel separating Lesbos from the Turkish coast. This channel defines Lesbos’s close geographic relationship with Anatolia.
Ouzo: Ouzo is an anise-flavored distilled spirit associated with Greece and commonly served with water or ice. Lesbos is a major center of ouzo production, especially around Plomari.
Alcaeus of Mytilene: Alcaeus of Mytilene was an archaic Greek lyric poet and contemporary of Sappho. His surviving fragments offer another major poetic voice rooted in Lesbos.
Moria refugee camp: Moria refugee camp was a large reception and detention center on Lesbos that burned in September 2020. Its overcrowding and destruction became emblematic of the island’s migration emergency.
Aegean Sea: The Aegean Sea is the eastern Mediterranean basin between Greece and Turkey, dotted with islands. Lesbos lies in the northeastern part of this island-filled sea.
Plomari: Plomari is a coastal town in southern Lesbos known for ouzo distilleries. Its distilleries make the town central to the island’s best-known spirit.
