Levantine Sea

The Levantine Sea is the easternmost part of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by southern Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, and Libya.

Mediterranean Sea: A large inland sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean and bordered by Europe, Africa, and Asia. The Levantine Sea forms the Mediterranean's easternmost marine region.
Thermohaline circulation: Large-scale ocean circulation driven by differences in seawater density caused by temperature and salinity. Density differences help drive water movement through the eastern Mediterranean.

Eastern Mediterranean Transient: A major late-twentieth-century shift in deep-water formation from the Adriatic Sea to the Aegean Sea. It altered the source and circulation of deep water entering the Levantine basin.
Leviathan gas field: A large offshore natural-gas field in the Mediterranean Sea west of Israel. It is one of the region's largest discoveries within the Levantine basin.
Marine heatwave: A prolonged period of unusually warm ocean temperatures relative to a local historical range. Warming episodes intensify ecological stress in the already warm eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus: An island country in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Turkey and west of Syria. Its shores divide the northern and southern approaches across the Levantine Sea.
Levantine Intermediate Water: A warm, saline intermediate water mass formed in the eastern Mediterranean and exported westward. Its formation in the basin helps ventilate intermediate depths across the Mediterranean.
