Lewis Cass

Lewis Cass (1782–1866) was an American military officer, diplomat, and politician who governed Michigan Territory, served as secretary of war and secretary of state, and represented Michigan in the Senate.

Andrew Jackson: Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States, serving from 1829 to 1837. Jackson appointed Cass governor of Michigan Territory in 1813 and secretary of war in 1831.
Michigan Territory: Michigan Territory was a U.S. territory organized in 1805 and admitted as a state in 1837. Cass governed the territory from 1813 to 1831, overseeing its expansion and transition toward statehood.
Popular sovereignty: Popular sovereignty is the principle that residents of a territory should decide whether to permit slavery. Cass championed this approach in 1847 as a way to address slavery in western territories.

Treaty of Ghent: The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 between the United States and Britain. Cass took part in the U.S. military and political aftermath of the war that the treaty concluded.
Wilmot Proviso: The Wilmot Proviso was an 1846 proposal to prohibit slavery in territory acquired from Mexico. Its proposed federal ban stood against Cass’s preference for territorial voters to decide slavery’s status.
Trail of Tears: The Trail of Tears was the forced removal of Cherokee people from the southeastern United States to Indian Territory in 1838–1839. It followed the removal policy Cass supported as a national official.
Zachary Taylor: Zachary Taylor was a U.S. Army general and the twelfth president of the United States. Taylor defeated Cass in the 1848 presidential election despite Cass’s Democratic nomination.
United States Department of War: The United States Department of War administered the U.S. Army before its replacement by the Department of Defense. Cass led the department as secretary of war from 1831 to 1836.
