Leymah Gbowee

Leymah Gbowee is a Liberian peace activist who helped lead a women’s movement that contributed to ending Liberia’s Second Civil War. She received the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

Liberian Mass Action for Peace: A coalition of Liberian women who campaigned for an end to the Second Civil War through prayer, protest, and direct action. Gbowee helped organize and lead this coalition’s peace campaign.
Women in Peacebuilding Network: A regional network supporting women’s participation in peacebuilding across West Africa. Its training and organizing links helped shape Gbowee’s peacebuilding work.
2003 Accra peace talks: Negotiations in Accra among Liberian factions and political leaders that produced the agreement ending the Second Civil War. Gbowee and fellow activists brought protest directly to the negotiating venue.

Nonviolent resistance: The use of nonviolent actions to challenge authority or bring about political change. The women’s campaign used public, nonviolent pressure rather than armed force.
