Liang Qichao

Liang Qichao (1873–1929) was a Chinese scholar, journalist, reformer, and political thinker whose writing helped shape modern Chinese intellectual and political life.

Kang Youwei: A Qing-era Chinese scholar and reformer who advocated constitutional monarchy and led the 1898 reform movement. Liang became Kang’s leading pupil and collaborator in the campaign for reform.
Self-Strengthening Movement: A late Qing program to adopt Western military and industrial methods while preserving Qing institutions. Its limited reforms formed the backdrop to Liang’s demand for more sweeping change.
Xinmin shuo: Liang Qichao’s essays on renewing the people, published from 1902 to 1906. They set out his influential claim that national renewal required new civic character.
Chinese Nationalism: A political movement and set of ideas centered on Chinese national identity and sovereignty. Liang helped popularize the nation as a central object of political loyalty.
Xinhai Revolution: The 1911 revolution that ended the Qing dynasty and established the Republic of China. It replaced the monarchy Liang had once sought to reform rather than abolish.

New Culture Movement: A Chinese intellectual movement of the 1910s and 1920s that challenged Confucian traditions and promoted cultural reform. Its writers inherited debates about national renewal that Liang had helped establish.
Chinese Anarchism: A Chinese political movement that rejected the state and promoted social organization without centralized authority. Anarchists rejected the strong state and civic discipline Liang considered necessary for national survival.
