Liaodong Peninsula

The Liaodong Peninsula is a peninsula in northeastern China between the Bohai Sea and Korea Bay. It forms the southern part of Liaoning Province and includes the port city of Dalian.

Liaoning: A province in northeastern China, bordering the Yellow Sea and North Korea. The peninsula forms Liaoning’s southern part.
Goguryeo: An ancient Korean kingdom that ruled parts of Manchuria and the Korean Peninsula from 37 BCE to 668 CE. Goguryeo controlled territory around Liaodong during its expansion.
Port Arthur: A strategically located harbor at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, now part of Dalian. Its sheltered harbor made the peninsula a prized naval position.
Triple Intervention: A 1895 diplomatic intervention by Russia, France, and Germany that forced Japan to return the Liaodong Peninsula to China. It reversed Japan’s initial acquisition of the peninsula after the First Sino-Japanese War.
Shandong Peninsula: A peninsula in eastern China that projects into the Yellow Sea and borders the Bohai Sea. Like Liaodong, it separates the Bohai Sea from the Yellow Sea, but lies farther south.
Bohai Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific, nearly enclosed by northern China. Its western waters border the peninsula.
Liao dynasty: A Khitan-led dynasty that ruled parts of northern China and Mongolia from 907 to 1125. Its power extended over Liaodong after the fall of Bohai.
Dalian Port: A major commercial seaport in Dalian, Liaoning, China. It anchors the peninsula’s modern role in maritime trade.
Treaty of Portsmouth: The 1905 treaty that ended the Russo-Japanese War and transferred Russia’s leasehold rights in southern Liaodong to Japan. It formalized Japan’s return to the peninsula after defeating Russia.
Korean Peninsula: A peninsula in East Asia occupied by North Korea and South Korea. It faces Liaodong across Korea Bay and the northern Yellow Sea.
