Liaoshen Campaign

A 1948 campaign of the Chinese Civil War in which Communist forces defeated Nationalist armies and took control of Manchuria.

Siege of Jinzhou: A decisive 1948 battle in which Communist forces captured Jinzhou, cutting Nationalist land routes out of Manchuria. Taking Jinzhou isolated Nationalist forces in the northeast from the rest of China.
Lin Biao: A Chinese Communist military commander who led major campaigns during the Chinese Civil War. He commanded Communist forces in the Liaoshen Campaign.
Chinese Civil War: The conflict between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist government that resumed on a large scale after 1945. The Liaoshen Campaign was one of its decisive 1948 campaigns.
Pingjin Campaign: A 1948–1949 Chinese Civil War campaign in which Communist forces captured Beijing, Tianjin, and surrounding areas. The victory in Manchuria freed Communist forces to turn toward North China.
Battle of Tashan: A 1948 battle in which Communist troops blocked Nationalist relief forces trying to reach Jinzhou. The defense of Tashan prevented relief from undoing the siege of Jinzhou.

Manchuria: A historical region of northeastern Asia, corresponding chiefly to China's modern northeastern provinces. Control of this industrial and strategic region was the campaign's central prize.
Huaihai Campaign: A 1948–1949 Chinese Civil War campaign in which Communist forces defeated major Nationalist armies in central China. It was the other major campaign that helped decide the civil war's outcome.
Siege of Changchun: A prolonged 1948 Communist blockade that compelled Nationalist forces to surrender Changchun. The city's fall removed a major Nationalist stronghold before the campaign's final battles.
