Liber Pontificalis

The Liber Pontificalis is a collection of biographies of the bishops of Rome, compiled and expanded over several centuries. Its accounts combine historical information with legends, institutional memory, and claims about papal authority.

Anastasius Bibliothecarius: A ninth-century Frankish cleric and scholar who translated and compiled Greek historical and ecclesiastical texts into Latin. He is traditionally associated with a major early medieval revision of the biographies.
Bishop of Rome: The chief bishop of the Christian community in Rome, later commonly called the pope. Each entry centers on one holder of this office.
Church of Santa Maria Maggiore: A major Roman basilica dedicated to the Virgin Mary, founded in the fifth century. The biographies attribute its construction to Pope Sixtus III.
