Liberal Democratic Party

Japan’s conservative political party, founded in 1955 through the merger of two major parties. It has governed Japan for most of the postwar period.

Conservative Party of Japan: A Japanese political party formed in 1950 from a split in the Democratic Liberal Party. It was one of the two parties that merged to create the LDP.
Liberal Democratic Party factions: Internal groupings within the LDP that organize leadership support, appointments, and political resources. Factional competition has shaped candidate selection and power within the party.
Shinzo Abe: A Japanese prime minister who led the LDP and served two terms, from 2006–2007 and 2012–2020. His long second premiership made him the party’s most consequential recent leader.
