Liberal Party (UK)

The Liberal Party was a major British political party formed in 1859 from Whigs, Radicals, and Peelites. It governed Britain repeatedly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries before declining after the First World War.

Whigs: The Whigs were a British political grouping that developed into a party advocating parliamentary government and limits on royal power. They supplied the Liberal Party’s principal aristocratic and parliamentary tradition.
William Ewart Gladstone: William Ewart Gladstone was a Liberal statesman who served four terms as British prime minister between 1868 and 1894. His leadership defined Liberal government and its reforming program for much of the party’s ascendancy.
People's Budget: The People’s Budget was David Lloyd George’s 1909 budget, proposing higher taxes on land and wealth to fund social programs. It became a defining Liberal fiscal program and triggered a constitutional confrontation with the House of Lords.
Liberal Unionist Party: The Liberal Unionist Party was a British political party formed by Liberals who opposed Irish Home Rule and later allied with Conservatives. Its breakaway in 1886 permanently weakened Liberal unity and strengthened the Conservative alliance.
Conservative Party (UK): The Conservative Party is a British political party founded in the nineteenth century and traditionally associated with gradual change and established institutions. It was the Liberals’ principal rival in government and elections during their dominant period.
Radicals: Radicals were nineteenth-century British reformers who sought changes including expanded voting rights and parliamentary reform. Their reform agenda broadened the coalition that formed the Liberal Party.
Lord Palmerston: Lord Palmerston was a British statesman who served as prime minister from 1855 to 1858 and 1859 to 1865. He led the Liberal coalition during its formation and early years in government.
Parliament Act 1911: The Parliament Act 1911 restricted the House of Lords’ power to block legislation and removed its veto over money bills. The Liberal government secured it after the Lords rejected the People’s Budget.
Coupon Election: The Coupon Election was the 1918 British general election, in which coalition candidates received endorsements from Lloyd George and Conservative leader Bonar Law. The endorsements favored coalition Liberals and left Asquith’s faction electorally isolated.
Labour Party (UK): The Labour Party is a British political party founded in 1900 to represent working people and the trade union movement. Labour’s growth drew voters and support away from the Liberals in the early twentieth century.
