Liberty ship

A standardized cargo ship mass-produced by the United States during World War II. Liberty ships carried troops, vehicles, fuel, food, and other supplies to Allied forces.

Emergency Shipbuilding Program: A U.S. government program that expanded merchant-ship production during World War II. The program organized the contracts, shipyards, and production goals behind Liberty-ship construction.
Battle of the Atlantic: The prolonged campaign to protect Allied shipping from German attacks during World War II. Liberty ships carried supplies through the submarine-threatened Atlantic routes.
Ocean-class ship: A British-designed cargo ship whose basic design informed the American Liberty ship. U.S. planners adapted this British design as a starting point for rapid cargo-ship production.
SS John W. Brown: A Liberty ship launched in 1942 that survives as a museum ship in Baltimore, Maryland. Its preservation keeps a complete example of the type accessible as a historic vessel.
Welded shipbuilding: A method of joining ship plates and structural members by welding rather than riveting. Welding replaced much slower riveting in Liberty-ship production.
Lend-Lease: A U.S. program that supplied Allied nations with war matériel during World War II. Liberty ships transported much of the material sent to allies overseas.
United States Maritime Commission: A U.S. federal agency established to develop and regulate the merchant marine. The commission oversaw the Liberty-ship design and construction program.
SS Jeremiah O'Brien: A Liberty ship launched in 1943 and preserved as a museum ship in San Francisco, California. It is one of the few Liberty ships still operating under its own power.
Prefabrication: The manufacture of components before they are assembled into a finished structure. Shipyards built sections separately, then joined them to accelerate hull assembly.
Allied logistics in World War II: The systems that moved personnel, equipment, and supplies to Allied forces during World War II. Liberty ships were one element of the vast supply network supporting Allied campaigns.
