Library and information science

Library and information science studies how information is organized, preserved, retrieved, and used, and how libraries and information services are designed and managed.

Information organization: The arrangement of information resources to support consistent description, discovery, and use. It frames the discipline’s work of structuring collections and information environments.
Library catalog: A searchable database of a library’s materials and their descriptive records. Catalogs expose collection descriptions through search and browsing.
Digital preservation: The managed activities that keep digital information accessible and authentic over time. Preservation practice addresses the fragility and changing formats of digital collections.
Library of Alexandria: An ancient scholarly institution in Alexandria that collected texts from across the Mediterranean world. Its collecting ambitions became an enduring reference point for large libraries.
Intellectual freedom: The freedom to seek, receive, and communicate ideas without undue restriction. Library policies shape whether people can encounter contested ideas and materials.

Censorship: The suppression or restriction of information, expression, or access to works. Challenges to library collections expose conflicts between access and restriction.
