The United States’ national library and a research institution in Washington, D.C. It serves Congress and collects and preserves materials from around the world.

Library of Congress Classification: A subject-based system for arranging books and other materials, developed for the Library of Congress. It organizes much of the Library’s collection by subject.
Chronicling America: A digital collection of historic American newspapers provided by the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. It makes newspapers from across the United States available online.
United States Capitol: The seat of the United States Congress in Washington, D.C. The Library began in the Capitol to support congressional work.

Thomas Jefferson: The third president of the United States and an influential political thinker and book collector. His personal library formed the foundation of the Library’s collection after the 1814 fire.
Getty Research Institute: A research institution focused on the history of art, with a library, archives, and special collections. Its specialist collecting contrasts with the Library’s breadth across subjects and formats.
Library of Congress Subject Headings: A controlled vocabulary of subject terms used to describe resources in library catalogs. The Library’s subject headings make large collections searchable in consistent terms.
