Libya

Libya is a North African country between Egypt and Tunisia, with most of its territory in the Sahara. Its population and major cities are concentrated along the Mediterranean coast.

Italian colonization of Libya: Italy occupied and colonized Libya from 1911 until the Second World War. Italian rule reshaped the territory before Libya became an independent state.
Libyan oil industry: The extraction, processing, and export of petroleum in Libya. Oil exports provide most state revenue and are a focus of political competition.
Sahara: The vast hot desert spanning much of North Africa. Most of Libya lies within this desert, shaping settlement and transport.
European migrant crisis: A period of increased migration into Europe, especially during the mid-2010s. Libya became a major transit point for migrants crossing the central Mediterranean.
Tripoli: The capital and largest city of Libya, on the Mediterranean coast. Tripoli is the country’s principal political and commercial center.
Kingdom of Libya: The independent Libyan monarchy established in 1951 under King Idris. It was Libya’s first postcolonial state and preceded the 1969 coup.
National Oil Corporation: Libya’s state-owned company responsible for managing much of the country’s oil sector. Its operations connect oil production to national revenues and international markets.
Mediterranean Sea: The sea between southern Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. Libya’s northern coast borders the sea and contains its largest cities.
Central Mediterranean route: A migration route across the Mediterranean from North Africa toward Italy and Malta. Many departures take place from Libya’s coast.
Benghazi: A major eastern Libyan port city on the Mediterranean coast. Benghazi is the largest city in Cyrenaica and a center of eastern politics.
