Intellectual property : Intellectual property comprises legal rights protecting creations, inventions, brands, and other intangible assets. Licenses grant permission to use these protected assets without necessarily transferring ownership.
License agreement : A license agreement is a contract setting out permission to use specified property and the conditions attached to that permission. It records the scope, duration, fees, and obligations of a particular license.
Software license : A software license sets conditions for installing, running, copying, modifying, or distributing software. It specifies what users and organizations may do with licensed programs.
Assignment (law) : An assignment is a transfer of a legal right or property interest from one party to another. Unlike a license, an assignment can transfer ownership of intellectual-property rights.
Technology transfer : Technology transfer is the movement of knowledge, technical capability, or technology between organizations or people. Licenses provide a contractual route for moving inventions and know-how into use.
Copyright : Copyright protects original works of authorship by giving creators or rights holders exclusive rights over specified uses. Copyright licenses authorize uses such as copying, distribution, adaptation, or public performance.
Scope of license : The scope of a license defines the rights, activities, territory, users, and other uses the permission covers. The scope determines which acts are authorized and which remain prohibited.
Open-source license : An open-source license grants permission to use, modify, and redistribute software under stated conditions. It makes software reuse possible while defining obligations such as preserving notices or sharing source code.
Public domain : The public domain consists of works and other material not protected by exclusive intellectual-property rights. Public-domain material generally does not require a rights holder's license for uses copyright law would otherwise restrict.
Patent pool : A patent pool is an arrangement in which multiple patent holders make a collection of patents available through shared licensing. Pooling can simplify access to technologies requiring multiple patent permissions.
