Life imprisonment

Life imprisonment is a criminal sentence that confines a person for life, though some jurisdictions permit release through parole or sentence review.

Life without parole: A life sentence that provides no ordinary possibility of release on parole. It marks the sharpest distinction from life sentences that allow parole consideration.
Fixed-term imprisonment: A prison sentence for a specified duration, rather than for the remainder of a person's life. It contrasts life imprisonment with sentences that have a defined end date.
Prison overcrowding: A condition in which a prison holds more people than its facilities can safely or adequately accommodate. Long sentences can keep people incarcerated for decades and contribute to persistent population pressure.
R v Secretary of State for the Home Department, ex parte Hindley: A 1998 English court case concerning the Home Secretary’s power to set a life prisoner’s minimum term. It exposed the tension between executive tariff-setting and judicial sentencing authority.
Proportionality in sentencing: The principle that a criminal punishment should correspond in severity to the offense and the offender’s culpability. It frames challenges to life sentences as excessive for particular crimes or defendants.
Parole: Conditional release from prison, supervised in the community under legal requirements. Parole determines whether and when some life-sentenced prisoners can be released.
