Knowra Liminality Liminality Liminality is a transitional state in which people or groups are between established social roles, identities, or stages of life. It unsettles ordinary categories and can make change, uncertainty, and new possibilities more visible.
Arnold van Gennep : French ethnographer whose 1909 book The Rites of Passage described recurring stages in ceremonial transitions. His tripartite model established the passage structure that Victor Turner later called liminal.
Separation (Rites of Passage) : The phase in a rite of passage when participants are detached from their previous social status. This phase prepares participants to leave familiar roles before entering liminality.
Pilgrimage : A journey to a place regarded as sacred or spiritually significant. Pilgrims may temporarily leave everyday roles and form bonds outside ordinary hierarchies.
Social Structure : The durable patterns of relationships, roles, and institutions that organize a society. Liminality temporarily suspends or blurs the positions that structure ordinarily makes clear.
Social Change : A significant alteration in social institutions, relationships, norms, or patterns of collective life. Liminal periods can loosen established roles and allow new social arrangements to take shape.
Rites of Passage : Ceremonies marking transitions between social statuses, often organized into separation, transition, and incorporation. Liminality names the transitional phase in van Gennep’s broader pattern.
Transition (Rites of Passage) : The middle phase of a rite of passage, when participants have left an old status but not acquired a new one. This is the phase most directly identified with liminality.
Initiation : A ceremony or process that admits someone into a group, status, or body of knowledge. Initiations often place participants between former identities and newly recognized membership.
Marginality : A condition of limited access to social, economic, or political power and participation. Unlike a temporary passage, marginalization can be lasting and imposed by unequal power.
Creativity : The capacity to generate ideas, practices, or works that are novel and useful within a context. Suspended conventions can make experimentation more possible during liminal periods.
