Limonene

Limonene is a cyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon found in citrus oils. Its two enantiomers have different aromas and occur in different plants.

Terpene: A class of compounds built from isoprene-derived units, found widely in plants and other organisms. Limonene is a monoterpene, a terpene assembled from two five-carbon units.
Limonene synthase: A plant enzyme that catalyzes formation of limonene from geranyl diphosphate. It performs the characteristic ring-forming step in limonene biosynthesis.
Essential oil: A concentrated mixture of volatile compounds produced by plants, often carrying characteristic odors. Citrus essential oils are major natural sources of limonene.
D-Limonene: The dextrorotatory enantiomer of limonene, commonly abundant in citrus peel oils and associated with orange aroma. It is the limonene form most often encountered in citrus-derived products.
Monoterpene: A terpene composed of two isoprene units, usually containing ten carbon atoms. This class identifies limonene's carbon count and biosynthetic family.
Geranyl diphosphate: A ten-carbon isoprenoid diphosphate that serves as a precursor to many monoterpenes. Limonene synthase cyclizes this substrate to produce limonene.
Citrus oil: Volatile oil obtained from citrus fruit tissues, rich in limonene and other aroma compounds. Limonene is often the dominant constituent of cold-pressed citrus peel oil.
L-Limonene: The levorotatory enantiomer of limonene, found in some plants and associated with a pine-like aroma. Its odor contrasts with the orange-like scent of the more common citrus enantiomer.
Isoprene: A five-carbon diene that serves as a basic building unit in terpene biosynthesis. Two isoprene-derived units form limonene's ten-carbon skeleton.
Terpene cyclization: A reaction sequence in which terpene precursors form cyclic carbon skeletons through enzyme-catalyzed rearrangements. Limonene's ring is created by this type of biosynthetic transformation.
