Lin Zexu

Lin Zexu was a Qing dynasty official and scholar whose campaign against the opium trade helped trigger the First Opium War.

Humen destruction of opium: The 1839 destruction of seized British opium at Humen, near Canton, under Lin Zexu’s supervision. Lin’s public destruction of confiscated opium made his anti-trade campaign an international confrontation.
Daoguang Emperor: The Qing emperor who ruled from 1820 to 1850 and authorized Lin Zexu’s campaign against opium. The emperor’s appointment and backing gave Lin authority to act in Guangdong.
Opium trade in China: The commerce that brought opium, largely grown in British India, into China despite Qing prohibitions. This was the trade Lin sought to suppress, and its scale made local enforcement politically explosive.
Unequal treaties: Treaties imposed on China by foreign powers that secured privileges without reciprocal bargaining power. The defeat that followed Lin’s campaign began a period of treaty concessions.

Charles Elliot: A British diplomat and naval officer who served as superintendent of trade in China during the opium crisis. Elliot negotiated with Lin and surrendered British-held opium for destruction.
Opium Wars: Two nineteenth-century conflicts in which Britain and France used military force to expand access and privileges in China. Lin’s campaign belongs to the opening crisis of this broader era of foreign coercion.
