Line dance

A group dance in which dancers stand in rows and perform a repeated sequence of steps, usually in unison and without partners.

Choreography: The planning and arrangement of movements in a dance or other performance. A line dance is built from a choreographed sequence repeated by the group.
Country line dance: A line-dance style associated with country music and social dancing. It is the best-known branch of line dancing in many contemporary settings.
Traditional folk dance: Dance traditions transmitted within communities across generations, often through social participation. Line dancing shares folk dance’s communal learning and group performance.
Partner dance: A dance in which two people coordinate movements as partners. Line dancing usually dispenses with the paired relationship central to partner dance.
Dance step: A basic unit of movement used in a dance. Individual steps combine into the recurring patterns of a line dance.
Contra dance: A social folk dance performed by couples in long lines, following a caller’s instructions. Unlike line dancing, it organizes dancers into changing partner formations.

Circle dance: A group dance in which participants form a circle and move through a shared sequence. Its dancers form a ring rather than the rows characteristic of line dancing.
Eight-count: A way of organizing movement or music into groups of eight beats. Many line-dance sequences are taught and counted in eight-beat phrases.
Square dance: A social dance in which four couples form a square and follow a caller’s instructions. Its caller-led figures and partner structure differ from fixed line formations.
