Linear motor

An electric motor that produces force and motion along a straight path instead of rotating a shaft. It creates linear thrust through electromagnetic interaction between stationary and moving parts.

Lorentz force: The force exerted on an electric charge or current by an electromagnetic field. Magnetic force on current-carrying conductors produces the motor’s linear thrust.
Maglev train: A train supported and guided by magnetic forces rather than conventional wheel-on-rail contact. Linear motors can propel maglev trains without converting rotation into forward motion.
Rotary electric motor: An electric motor that converts electrical energy into rotation of a shaft. It produces rotation first, so linear motion usually requires a belt, screw, or other transmission.
Stator: The stationary part of an electric motor or generator that contains windings or magnetic components. A linear motor’s stator extends along the direction in which thrust is produced.
Linear induction motor: A linear motor in which a traveling magnetic field induces currents in a conductive secondary part. It generates thrust without requiring electrical contact with the moving part.
Electromagnetic catapult: A launch system that accelerates aircraft using electrically generated force along a track. Its long-stator linear motor supplies controlled acceleration for aircraft launches.
Ball screw: A mechanical actuator that converts screw rotation into linear movement using recirculating ball bearings. It provides an efficient alternative when a rotary motor can drive a screw mechanism.
Rotor: The rotating component of a motor or generator, which interacts electromagnetically with its stationary part. Linear motors often have an analogous moving component called a mover instead of a rotor.
Linear synchronous motor: A linear motor whose moving magnetic field remains synchronized with its mover. Its synchronized field enables precise control of mover position and speed.
Linear actuator: A device that produces motion in a straight line to move or position a load. Linear motors are one direct-drive way to build an electrically controlled actuator.
