Lingala

Lingala is a Bantu language spoken chiefly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. It serves as a major lingua franca in the region and is widely used in music and public life.

Bantu languages: A large family of languages within the Niger–Congo language family, spoken across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Lingala belongs to this family and shares its noun-class system.
Bobangi language: A Bantu language historically spoken along the Congo River and associated with Lingala's development. Bobangi supplied much of Lingala's early vocabulary and structure.
Congolese rumba: A popular music genre from the Congo region combining African musical traditions with Cuban influences. Lingala lyrics helped Congolese rumba reach audiences across Central Africa.

Congo River: A major river in Central Africa flowing through the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. River trade and travel helped spread Lingala among communities.
Soukous: A dance music genre that developed from Congolese rumba, known for fast guitar patterns and energetic rhythms. Many soukous songs use Lingala as their principal vocal language.
Kikongo: A Bantu language and language continuum spoken in parts of Central Africa, including the Congo region. Kikongo is a related regional language, not a variety of Lingala.
Noun class: A grammatical system that groups nouns and marks their classes through forms such as prefixes and agreement. Lingala uses noun classes to shape agreement and meaning.
Bangala language: An early form of Lingala associated with nineteenth-century river trade and colonial administration. The name and early variety mark Lingala's historical formation.
