Linguistic typology

Linguistic typology compares structural features across languages, classifying recurring patterns and investigating how grammatical structures vary and correlate.

Word order: The arrangement of words or phrases in a sentence, especially the relative order of subject, object, and verb. Subject–object–verb order is one of typology’s clearest cross-language dimensions.
Implicational universal: A proposed cross-linguistic generalization stating that the presence of one feature entails another. These conditional patterns express relationships that typological surveys seek to establish.
August Wilhelm Schlegel: A German philologist who proposed influential early classifications of languages by their grammatical structure. His morphological categories helped establish structural classification as a comparative project.
Linguistic area: A region where languages share structural features through contact rather than common descent. Typological similarities can reveal contact patterns that cut across language families.
Linguistic diversity: The range of differences among the world’s languages in sound, grammar, vocabulary, and use. Typology maps structural variation within this broader diversity.
Morphological typology: The classification of languages by how words are formed and grammatical information is expressed. It distinguishes languages by the structure of words, complementing comparisons of sentence order.
Greenberg's universals: A set of cross-linguistic generalizations published by Joseph Greenberg from comparisons of language structures. Greenberg’s proposals made word-order correlations a central model for typological generalization.
Friedrich Schlegel: A German philologist whose early work compared language structures and advanced the idea of inflectional language types. His classification helped launch nineteenth-century typological thinking about word structure.
Language contact: The interaction of speakers of different languages, which can lead to linguistic change and borrowing. Contact helps explain why neighboring languages may converge on similar structures.
Evolutionary linguistics: The study of how language arose and changed through biological and cultural evolution. It asks how cognitive and cultural pressures could produce recurring structural patterns.
