Linked data

Linked data is a method of publishing structured data on the web using shared standards and links so datasets can be connected and queried across sources.

Uniform Resource Identifier: A Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) is a string that identifies a resource, such as a web page or data entity. Linked data uses URIs to identify entities and properties consistently across datasets.
Semantic Web: The Semantic Web is a vision of web data whose structure and meaning can be processed by software. Linked data is a practical publishing approach within this broader vision.
DBpedia: DBpedia is a project that extracts structured information from Wikipedia and publishes it as linked data. It became a prominent hub connecting encyclopedic data with other web datasets.
Tim Berners-Lee: Tim Berners-Lee is the computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web. He formulated linked-data principles to extend the web from documents to structured data.

Wikidata: Wikidata is a collaboratively edited knowledge base that provides structured data for Wikimedia projects and others. Its identifiers and statements can be linked from external datasets and services.
Linked Data principles: Linked Data principles are guidelines for identifying, describing, and connecting resources with web standards. They state the publishing practices that give linked data its characteristic web-wide connections.
Relational database: A relational database stores data in tables connected through keys and constraints. Unlike a single database schema, linked data connects descriptions through globally usable web identifiers.
