Lip balm

Lip balm is a waxy or oily topical product applied to the lips to moisturize them and protect them from dryness and irritation.

Occlusive moisturizer: A moisturizer that forms a surface barrier to reduce water loss from skin. Waxes and oils in lip balm work mainly by creating this kind of barrier.
Vermilion border: The visible boundary between the lip's red surface and the surrounding facial skin. The exposed lip surface has different protective properties from the skin around it.
Sunscreen: A topical product that reduces ultraviolet radiation reaching the skin. Lip balms with UV filters help protect the lips from sun exposure.
Allergic contact cheilitis: Inflammation of the lips caused by an allergic reaction to a substance contacting them. Fragrances, flavors, and preservatives in lip products can trigger this reaction.

Petrolatum: A semisolid mixture of hydrocarbons used as an ointment base and skin protectant. It forms a persistent barrier that limits water loss from the lips.
Stratum corneum: The outermost layer of the epidermis, made largely of flattened, keratin-filled cells. Its comparatively limited barrier on the lips leaves them prone to water loss.
Zinc oxide: An inorganic compound used in topical products as a pigment and ultraviolet filter. It can provide broad-spectrum UV protection in lip products.
Irritant contact cheilitis: Lip inflammation caused by direct irritation rather than an allergic immune response. Frequent exposure to irritating ingredients or habits can worsen chapped lips.
Personal care: Routine practices and products used to maintain hygiene, comfort, and bodily well-being. Using balm is a small, widely repeated part of everyday personal care.
