Lip sync

Lip sync is the coordination of visible mouth movements with recorded speech or music. It can reproduce a specific performance or create the appearance that a performer is speaking or singing.

Phoneme: A phoneme is a speech sound category that distinguishes words in a language. Lip movements are often planned around the visible articulation of speech sounds.
Voice acting: Voice acting is the performance of a character or narration using the voice. Recorded voice performances provide the dialogue that animated characters must appear to speak.
Lip dubbing: Lip dubbing is a performance in which someone mouths another person’s recorded speech or song. It is a familiar form of lip sync, often performed for comedy or imitation.

Viseme: A viseme is a visual category of mouth shapes associated with one or more speech sounds. Visemes reduce speech sounds to the mouth shapes an animator needs to reproduce.
Music video: A music video is a visual work made to accompany a recorded song. Performers often mouth or sing along to the song’s prerecorded vocal track.
Live singing: Live singing is vocal performance produced in real time before an audience or recording equipment. Unlike lip sync to a recording, live singing generates the vocal sound during the visible performance.
Suspension of disbelief: Suspension of disbelief is an audience’s willingness to accept a fictional presentation while engaging with it. Convincing lip sync helps preserve the illusion that an animated or dubbed character is speaking.
Audio-visual speech perception: Audio-visual speech perception combines auditory speech with visual information from a speaker’s face. The perceived match depends on how the brain integrates mouth movements and sound.
Live television: Live television broadcasts programs as they are being performed or produced. Some televised performances use prerecorded vocals synchronized with visible performers.
