Literary censorship

Literary censorship is the restriction or suppression of written works by governments, institutions, or social pressure, through bans, alterations, or limits on circulation.

Prior restraint: Prior restraint is government action that prevents expression before it is published or communicated. Licensing and advance review can stop a literary work before publication.
The Satanic Verses controversy: The Satanic Verses controversy was a global political and religious dispute over Salman Rushdie's 1988 novel. Bans and threats surrounding the novel show censorship extending beyond state borders.
Printing press: The printing press is a technology that produces multiple copies of text through reusable type or other mechanical means. Mass reproduction expanded both literary circulation and authorities' incentive to control it.
