Literary modernism

A literary movement that broke with established forms to explore modern experience through experimentation, fragmentation, and shifting perspectives.

Realism: A literary mode that represents ordinary life and social conditions through plausible characters and events. Modernist writers rejected realism’s confidence that coherent narration could represent experience fully.
Ulysses: James Joyce’s 1922 novel follows Leopold Bloom through a single day in Dublin using varied styles and techniques. Its shifting styles and interior narration became defining examples of modernist experimentation.
World War I: A global war fought from 1914 to 1918 between the Allied and Central Powers. Its devastation deepened modernist writers’ distrust of inherited cultural narratives.
James Joyce: An Irish novelist and short-story writer whose work includes Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. His linguistic and structural experiments pushed the modernist novel toward radical complexity.
Postmodern literature: Literature that often questions stable meaning through metafiction, parody, and self-conscious formal play. Postmodern writers inherited modernist formal disruption while challenging its claims to coherence and authority.
Stream of consciousness: A narrative technique that presents the continuous flow of a character’s thoughts and sensations. It gives form to modernism’s interest in inner experience and unstable thought.
The Waste Land: T. S. Eliot’s 1922 poem assembles fragmented voices, quotations, and allusions into a portrait of cultural crisis. Its collage form makes rupture and cultural exhaustion central to poetic structure.
Sigmund Freud: An Austrian neurologist who founded psychoanalysis and developed influential theories of the unconscious. Psychoanalysis gave writers new models for representing memory, desire, and hidden motives.
Virginia Woolf: An English novelist and essayist associated with the Bloomsbury Group and works including Mrs Dalloway. Her fiction made shifting consciousness and subjective time central to narrative form.
Narrative fragmentation: The presentation of a story through discontinuous scenes, voices, or temporal sequences. Modernist experiments made fragmentation a lasting alternative to continuous plot.
