Lithium hydroxide

Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) is an inorganic compound made of lithium and hydroxide ions. It is a strong base used in lithium processing, carbon dioxide removal, and battery-material production.

Lithium-ion battery: A rechargeable battery that stores energy through lithium-ion movement between electrodes. Lithium hydroxide supplies lithium for cathode materials used in some battery chemistries.
Hydroxide: The polyatomic anion OH⁻, consisting of one oxygen and one hydrogen atom. Hydroxide ions give lithium hydroxide its alkaline behavior.
Lithium: A soft, highly reactive alkali metal with atomic number 3. Lithium hydroxide contains lithium as its positively charged ion.
Lithium hydroxide monohydrate: The crystalline hydrate LiOH·H₂O, containing one water molecule per lithium hydroxide formula unit. Battery supply chains commonly trade and process this hydrated form.
Lithium iron phosphate: A lithium-ion battery cathode material with the formula LiFePO₄. It is one cathode material made using lithium compounds, including lithium hydroxide.
Strong base: A base that dissociates nearly completely in water to produce hydroxide ions. Dissolved lithium hydroxide releases hydroxide ions almost completely.
Ionic compound: A substance composed of oppositely charged ions held together by electrostatic attraction. Lithium hydroxide consists of Li⁺ and OH⁻ ions.
Lithium hydroxide anhydrous: Lithium hydroxide without water of crystallization, with formula LiOH. This water-free form is used where moisture content must be minimized.
Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide: A family of lithium-ion battery cathode materials containing nickel, manganese, and cobalt. Lithium hydroxide is commonly used to supply lithium during production of these cathodes.
Neutralization: A chemical reaction in which an acid and a base form water and a salt. Lithium hydroxide neutralizes acids by consuming their hydrogen ions.
