Lithium oxide

Lithium oxide (Li₂O) is an ionic compound of lithium and oxygen. It is a strongly basic oxide used in ceramics, glass, and solid-oxide materials.

Lithium: Lithium is the lightest metal, an alkali metal with one valence electron. Lithium atoms form Li⁺ ions in this compound.
Lithium hydroxide: Lithium hydroxide is an inorganic base with formula LiOH. Water converts lithium oxide into this hydroxide.
Lithium silicate glass: Lithium silicate glass is glass whose composition includes lithium oxide and silica. Li₂O acts as a glass modifier, influencing processing and material properties.
Lithium peroxide: Lithium peroxide is an ionic compound, Li₂O₂, containing peroxide ions with an O–O bond. It contains more oxygen per lithium atom and a different oxygen ion than Li₂O.
Oxygen: Oxygen is a reactive nonmetal that commonly forms compounds in the −2 oxidation state. Oxygen becomes oxide, O²⁻, in Li₂O.
Lithium carbonate: Lithium carbonate is a lithium salt with formula Li₂CO₃. Carbon dioxide reacts with lithium oxide to produce this carbonate.
Glass-ceramic: A glass-ceramic is a material produced by controlled crystallization of a glass. Lithium-containing compositions can form glass-ceramics with tailored thermal behavior.
Lithium superoxide: Lithium superoxide is a compound, LiO₂, containing superoxide ions. Its superoxide anion contrasts with the oxide ion in lithium oxide.
Ionic bond: An ionic bond is the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions. The crystal is held together by attraction between Li⁺ and O²⁻.
Acid–base reaction: An acid–base reaction involves proton transfer or neutralization between acidic and basic species. Lithium oxide neutralizes acids, forming lithium salts and water.
