Littoral zone

The shallow aquatic region adjoining a shore, shaped by shoreline conditions and, in lakes, often extending to the depth where rooted plants can grow.

Shore: The land bordering a body of water, including the strip shaped by waves and changing water levels. The shoreline sets the landward boundary of the littoral zone.
Wave action: The movement and force of waves as they interact with shorelines and submerged surfaces. Waves disturb sediments and organisms along exposed littoral shores.
Lake littoral zone: The shallow margin of a lake where light often supports rooted aquatic plants. This is the lake-specific setting in which the term often denotes plant-growing habitat.
Intertidal zone: The coastal area alternately exposed and submerged by tides. It is a sharply defined marine littoral habitat governed by tidal exposure.
Shoreline hardening: The replacement or reinforcement of natural shorelines with structures such as seawalls and riprap. Hard structures alter erosion, habitat complexity, and connections between land and water.
Euphotic zone: The water layer receiving enough light for photosynthesis to occur. In lakes, light penetration helps determine how deep rooted plants can grow.
Light attenuation: The decrease in light intensity as light travels through water or another medium. Light loss limits the depth of submerged plant growth.
Coastal zone: The area where land and sea interact, including shorelines and adjacent marine waters. The coastal zone is the broader setting for marine littoral habitats.
Rocky shore: A shoreline habitat dominated by exposed bedrock, boulders, or stable stones. Wave exposure and attachment surfaces make this a distinct littoral community.
Eutrophication: Excess nutrient enrichment that stimulates biological production and can degrade water quality. Nutrient enrichment can promote algal growth and reduce light for littoral plants.
