Live streaming transmits audio or video over a network as it is captured, letting audiences follow with only a short delay.

Real-time Transport Protocol: A network protocol that carries time-sensitive audio and video, commonly alongside timing and control information. It packetizes media for delivery while preserving timing needed for synchronized playback.
Twitch: A live-streaming service known for gaming broadcasts, creator channels, and live chat. Its creator-and-chat format is a prominent example of interactive live broadcasting.
Video on demand: A service that lets users choose and play recorded video at a time of their choosing. It removes the defining dependence on transmission while content is being captured.
Live chat: A text conversation in which messages appear and can be read in near real time. It lets audiences respond during a broadcast and can make otherwise one-way streams interactive.

YouTube Live: YouTube's feature for broadcasting live video to audiences on the platform. It combines live broadcasts with an established video-hosting and recommendation service.
Near-live television: Television content recorded shortly before broadcast, with a delay that allows editing or scheduling. Its polished, delayed transmission differs from streams sent as events unfold.
Parasocial interaction: A feeling of personal connection with a media figure who does not know the audience member individually. Repeated live appearances and direct address can intensify perceived closeness between creators and viewers.
Edge computing: Computing performed near the devices or locations where data is produced or consumed. Moving stream processing closer to viewers may reduce delay, but adds deployment complexity.
