Livingston Island

Livingston Island is an island in Antarctica’s South Shetland Islands, between Greenwich Island and Snow Island. It is known for its glaciated terrain, Antarctic research stations, and early history of sealing.

South Shetland Islands: An Antarctic archipelago north of the Antarctic Peninsula, separated from it by the Bransfield Strait. Livingston Island is one of the archipelago’s largest islands.
Spanish Antarctic Base: A seasonal Spanish research station on Livingston Island’s Byers Peninsula. It supports scientific work at the island’s western end.
Antarctic sealing: The commercial hunting of seals in Antarctic waters, especially during the nineteenth century. Sealers visited Livingston Island soon after its discovery and established camps there.
Greenwich Island: An island in the South Shetland Islands, east of Livingston Island. It forms the island’s eastern neighbor across McFarlane Strait.
Bransfield Strait: A body of water between the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. It separates Livingston Island from the Antarctic Peninsula.
St. Kliment Ohridski Base: A Bulgarian Antarctic research station on Livingston Island’s Hurd Peninsula. It is one of the island’s two principal research bases.
William Smith (sealer): An English sealer and navigator who sighted the South Shetland Islands in 1819. His voyages helped bring the archipelago, including Livingston Island, to wider notice.
Snow Island: An island in the South Shetland Islands, southwest of Livingston Island. It lies immediately beyond Livingston Island’s western end.
Antarctic Peninsula: The northernmost part of mainland Antarctica, extending toward South America. This nearby peninsula shapes regional access and weather around Livingston Island.
Byers Peninsula: A largely ice-free peninsula at the western end of Livingston Island. Its lakes, fossils, and protected habitats make it a major field-research area.
